I don't know that brand but by the specs that should work fine unless there was a defect in the pack or it was some how damaged.  Maybe just a bad ESC, seems like there has been a bit of a spike in the number of MMM failures lately.  My early V3's are holding up well but counting you I have seen like 3 newish ones die in the last month.  You, Aaron & one other. All 3 seem to have battery & motor combos that should be fine.  Just a side not about running down to cutoff. I don't think 3.2 V/cell is high enough for many packs & I have been using 3.4/cell.

The battery is an Outrage 6S XP25 3700 mah 25C.  The battery never even got warm even after 15 minutes of running to lipo cutoff.

Kevin P. what battery are you using and what are it's specs (V/mAh/C etc).  Batteries CAN cause the ESC to fail if they are not able keep up with the ESC.  Not saying this is what happened but if you have 1 pack fail then the next pack seems to short, it is possible that the first pack failed & took out the ESC.

On RC-Monster.com there is a good post about how batterys can kill a ESC.  You only need to read the postings by Pdelcast, He is the owner & cheif eng at Castle.

Sorry for the OT maybe I should have posted this in the 1/8 e thread.

Kevin,

Same thing happened to me a while back.  The speed control had some short in it.  When I hooked up my lipo, it started swelling up and smoking.  Luckily, my arm just got a little burnt but I was able to cut the wires off in time.  CHECK YOUR SPEEDOS!

It looks like it wasn't the battery's fault.  I just hooked my other battery up, or I should say tried to, and it's a direct short inside the speed control.  I had all kinds of fireworks going on.  Something caused the speed control to go bad and fried the battery.  I guess I'll send this one back for repair.

Wow!! sorry to hear what happened Kevin. I'm glad you saved your buggy. You have a good point by having a bucket of sand or fire extinguisher next to the track just in case it happens to anyone else. I'm thankful, my 3 lipos are hardcased.

Not sure Chris.  The battery was only on it's 3rd charge, as I got it new last week.  I balanced it and charged it at 4 amps, and it worked fine the first couple of times.  When it blew it was like a blowtorch coming out of the back of my car.  I still can't believe it didn't burn to the ground.  Thanks to Kraig for yanking the battery from the car before any more damage happened.

I would think that 1/8 offroad would be the hardest on the batts.   The shock from casing a large jump cannot be good for the battery.  How many that have smoked a battery are using a balancer?  KP, do you know what caused your issue?

I won't bore everyone on this thread about lipos fires, but if you are interested - read this link.

http://www.rctech.net/forum/electric-road/182219-understanding-lipo-fires-101-a.html

The lithium in lithium ion batteries are ions and are not flammable under normal use.  They can start plating on the anode to form flammable metallic lithium metal when overcharged or overdischarged.  Sand is a great and cheap solution to smother a lithium fire.

Everyone loves running soft cased lipos in their 1/8th scale conversions.  See point #6 in the aforementioned thread about mechanical damage.  Soft cased lipos and 1/8th scale off road is a recipie for fires.  Just the pressure point from the velcro straps is enough to create damage over time.  I know that both Losi and Tekin experienced 1/8th scale lipo fires back then they were testing their conversion kits with soft cased lipos.

Buy hard cased lipos.

Lithium is a water reactive flammable metal, and can produce a flammable gas when exposed to water while burning. So, USE NO WATER when attempting to extinguished a flammable metal fire. According to North American Emergency Response Guidebook for hazardous materials published for U.S.D.O.T. A dry chemical extinguisher should be used...some alternatives would be dry sand, soda ash or lime. Please keep in mind the key word here is DRY!!!

I mentioned this to Gary and I am sure Kevin will take note of it.I was thinking maybe have one right indoors so its accessible quickly and one near the offroad track for good measure.

I had a scare this weekend with my 1/8 scale.  I charged the battery and turned it on, and when I hit the throttle the battery blew up.  Luckily I got the fire out with some dirt and we got the battery out of the car before it burned up.  It burned up the battery straps and switch for the speed control.  I think it would be a good idea to have some buckets of sand and/or some fire extinguishers around the track because I have a feeling this will happen again to someone else.  Might save their car.
