When hasn't the track come thru. We are so freaking lucky to have both NorCal and Delta to race at.

How about this.

1. Close down the track.

2 Go get a big amount of dirt.

3. Sift the dirt

4. Make some sugar water.

5. Put the dry/sifted dirt in the worst holes

6. Pat it down and remove the excess

7. Spray the sugar water on the dry dirt.

8. Get a blowtorch and torch it.

9. Repeat to all bad ares.

10. Blow off the track

11. Put brooms around the track and sweep after every race.

That should do it.

I practiced today at lunch. The track wasn't too bad. If it was swept and/or blown off it would probably be pretty good. Hopefully the guys will soak it tonight right before they leave.

I haven't made a thread yet as there is a date change - but you can see on the home page of this site about the sweet series coming in May.   With a recent date change of an event in Chico, we can start the series early.  The opening date will be May 4th.  Kevin knows a thing or two about off-road tracks, he'll get cracking on it the end of the month - 30th-3rd.

Something else to mention - the indoor track will be leveled on Mother's Day

Honestly, I think that if the current track was blown off and sugared for a couple days it would be fine. The layout is great IMHO.

I'm 99% sure that Jon has already talked to Kevin and was just waiting to make sure the rain was done for the year they sugared the track. I would hope that they would sugar both lines and be done with it. I honestly don't care if the track is loose or blue groove as long as it is consistent. I really don't want HALF of the 1/8th line blue groove and half loose and dusty. That was why I voted for just blowing it off for now. It would be consistent at least. I hate when I go practice while the track is wet in the morning and think I have a solid setup and then go slip and slide through the heats and main.

For some of us Delta really isn't an option on a weekly basis.

@Hater, wise words, I hope NorCal listens to them. The wet/fluff/dusty track transition you described is exactly what I experienced Tuesday when I tried to practice. It got so bad so quickly that it just wasn't any fun any more. I really like NorCal and the people that run it, but it's got me thinking of going elsewhere.

The current layout is alot of fun, do you think if they swept and blew it off, then sealed it with sugar or VHT, it would be good?

This was something that was always done by Norcal before. They would rent heavy equipment from Jeff Hastings and Kevin and a small crew would go out there and make it happen. If now we have to do this for whatever reasons, how are can you charge us to race? I understand Kevin is no longer available, and I am willing to help out but I see no commitment from Norcal to do what needs to be done. I am a consumer, and I do this for pure enjoyment. Right now I have many options to race offroad on the weekend, and I want to race at facility that is committed as I am.

Well a very experienced track builder and much man power is needed. Most people have 9 to 5 work days before putting in another 20 to 40 hours of work! Much money to get equipment in is also an issue. Those that say rebuild it will not chip in. I know I can not my self. So love it or hate it the track is their for much fun. So go with the flow or with the wind and have fun!

That's something that needs to be done on a rebuild session and will require a 2 week shutdown.

Thats what the track needs. No more lip service. Hater's right, quality wins! Take it down and fix it right.

A few comments and things I would like to chime in on. I've been quiet on this issue for weeks and taken my concerns to ownership privately last week. Enough is enough. As the longest off roader at Nor Cal Hobbies, I would like to speak my peace. I have been racing at Nor Cal Hobbies since the 1st ownership in 2005. I raced at the first On-Road and Off-Road race. I have seen good tracks, bad tracks, tracks with crazy wall rides, good surfaces, bad surfaces, and everything in-between. The turnouts haven't been good. You can't blame anything on Delta or any other track. Quite simple, quality wins. The cream rises to the top.

COMMENT BY BOGEY JUSTPOET, & BALLER:

"Also who will be sugaring and prepping the outdoor track? Sugar is a touchy technique. If its not done correctly it can turn a good track into a not so good track."

Exactly. Management needs to call the last person who prepped the track correctly. Copy down what they say, and do it to a tee. The track must be closed down for at least 3 days to get this right. It should be done ASAP before the track loses anymore momentum.

"The last time I raced at norcal there seemed to be a disagreement on how the tracked will be prepped. One side leaned on the watering, the other leaned on the sweeping and blowing the track off?"

Exactly. These seems to be this thought that if you water it, it will somehow be better. So if you water it, the track will dry out with 20 mins. They what do you have? You have fluff. 20 mins after that you have dust. Then someone says, "lets blow the track off". That's a great idea! But if you blow it off then water it again you have a cycle of fluff that turns to dust. Dust equals no traction and a nightmare for 1/10 cars. If you leave it wet, our cars get muddy. There's all this talk about tire wear. Yes, a dry track wears your tires down. However, you will always have more traction on a dry track with abrasion that on a wet track with loose crap on the topsoil. When you use bald tires on a dry track you will still have more traction....and alot more than Nor Cal's indoor track.

"Is norcal going to have anymore just regular club races or is everything going to be a series race? This is like the 10th series in a row. Series races are nice and all but they loose their luster after you do so many. "

Agreed. You can't just keep throwing a series race as the answer to a turnout problem. Now that's throwing lipstick on a pig or whatever

"Once we have the surface done right, it'll blue groove in fairly quickly (1 race day should easily do it). That should happen prior to this series, and will include fixing the cracked areas as well as making sure there aren't stones in the 10th scale line. If you remember how the track was during last years Kings once it got worn in, that's about what we're aiming for with this resurface. "

Agreed. So what's the delay? I don't see any hurricanes in the horizon.

"Its not tough for a 2wd car at all. If the track was in optimal condition. The layout is not the issue here. "

Agreed. Agreed. Agreed. What are we waiting for?

"+1 Remember both 1/10 and 1/8 share the same track. Conditions should not cater to one or the other. Should be optimal for both. Also what fields more of a turnout? 8th or 10th scale? Have you ever seen a true blue groove? Not sure norcal has one yet. Its very dusty."

Yes the do. So sugar the 1/10 & 1/18 combined parts and leave the 1/8 parts alone. Easier to maintain and cheaper for the track. 1/10 fields more of a turnout. No brainier there. A $300 car is more affordable than a $800 one. 1/10 tires are cheaper as well. Nor Cal won't have a blue groove until it's sugared. There might be a small blue groove at the end of the straight where everyone brakes. However, it will be quickly negated by the dust that keeps piling up from the formerly wet dirt.

"Outdoor track needs new dirt! You can go out there and put lipstick on a pig, but all you end up with is a pig wearing lipstick! Look at Delta: If you build it right, they will come! I know there is a lot of willing volunteers, but track needs new dirt and heavy equipment to redo layout"

Disagree. It doesn't need new dirt. This dirt has been fine for a long time. Maybe it could be sifted more. Rocks will come up from time to time. That's something that needs to be done on a rebuild session and will require a 2 week shutdown.

Ladies & gentlemen. Maintaining a outdoor track isn't as easy as a small indoor track or even a on-road track. It takes care. If you can't do it, so be it....but getting it 1/2 right isn't going to cut it. People have options....both other tracks and other things to do with their time.

No need to debate nitro or electric.  Pick one (or both ) and get out and race and have some fun.

Good to hear the Tekno guys are coming up from SD.  Time to refresh the EB.

I raced nitro boats and planes for ~20 years. I spent hours reworking motors and maintaining the boats/planes. With my electrics I can find a setup that works just about everywhere and leave it alone. I also found that as my friends and I started families it became harder and harder to line up a consistent pit man.

Give it another couple years and 20 minute ebuggy mains will be the norm at big events. It's already possible with a 4s/6500 pack and reasonable electronics.

Electric is the future. Enjoy glow while you can. ;^)
