He always had an Apple sticker on his Schumacher Cats. Bruce and Eric V. can always make those Schumacher Cats go fast and smooth.

I ran into Bruce about a month ago. Still the same. Just more gray. He's some big Lego fanatic now.

IN the old days we used a flag for races that Bruce Chamberlain was in. If anyone still remembers Bruce C. It was always the turnmarshall[appointed] who did the flag start for Bruce. It might not be the best solution but it worked well back then.

You're right in that for qualifying it is a non-issue, but in any class if you don't start at the same time as everybody, you're likely getting rear-ended with everybody punching it unless you're at the back to start with, and that will throw you off course, along with them (and likely anybody behind the hit).

The plan is for her to be able to turn left and right when she decides to (as opposed to often mixing them up now) by the time I graduate out of rookie, and then for her to use the same SC truck in rookie when I start buggy.

As mentioned, my wife and I will do whatever we need to when that time comes, and my wife has enough sound sensitivity to pick up the tone when next to the loudspeaker if she knows it is coming next. But I wanted to see if I could work on a side project of my own to make NorCal more deaf friendly in case others might someday want to race too, even if they don't have a hearing person coming along with them. The bay area has a HUGE deaf population compared to everywhere else except DC.

Justpoet, I think Badboy's suggestion of a start flag is a very simple and effective solution to get your wife onto a fair start lap. Another easy way is to stand on the drivers stand behind her with your hand on her shoulder, squeeze when he gives the drivers ready call, and pull it off when you hear the tone. Remember, Norcal qualifiers are usually an IFMAR start, meaning start when you want (as long as you cross the line before you get lapped) because your racing the clock, not other drivers. She should put herself in the rookie class and we can figure it out. I thing getting women to race with us would be pretty cool.

Justpoet  it can be done, Mikes hobby in Dallas had one for a while but they found that it did not sinc all the time with the tone. it was a old stoplight that they hung for one of the driver as he was Deaf also. I will be in Dallas next week and will talk to moke about how it was hook up

If the pylon/bright output flashes or says Start or something similar at the same time as the tone, it could probably be used. If it is just for scrolling output of positions or changes in positions, it wouldn't. Haven't seen one of them in use to know which way it works.

RC Scoring Pro does have the ability to connect to a scoring pylon/beta brite.  Perhaps that might work?

Yeah, we can, and would/do, use various methods like that for ourselves. But I'd like to try building a technical solution that will work for others even when we're not there. A technical solution also won't have an extra person's response time of delay built in to give a large disadvantage to the deaf right off the start.

Justpoet.. you may consider bringing a flag for youre wife..  that way she can start from your flag when the tone goes off.

Completely different topic, while I'm thinking about it. What is the output that creates the starting tone? Is there any way to rig a light to the tone as well?

I ask because my wife is deaf (as is my buddy's wife, and the bay area has a large deaf population), and once she gets the hang of it enough to hit the rookie race (she's never driven before, so is getting the hang of turning the correct directions right now), I'd love for her to be able to race. My wife might be able to hear the tone if she's next to the loud speaker, but a light she could notice instead would make it much easier.

I'm not asking for the track to set this up for us, but trying to figure out if it is even possible to be done at this point. Might be a fun project for me to think on.
