Yeah but lets be honest, this isn't a hobby or sport that is going to be supporting many of the racers full income for their families. They need to reflect on the point that they are racing toy cars. If we were were talking about a F1 series infraction or something like that I would understand the raised emotions. But I think all of us can agree that racing at Norcal is probably (just maybe) a step or two down from racing F1.

And honestly in my years of racing SCCA Pro, BMW CAA, PCA, NASA, etc.....I never met many folks as "charming" as this martial was with me. Well maybe I can think of one guy who was pretty bad with the PCA.

And as I said before I find the majority of the folks I meet at these events tend to be really great guys. Everyone has to be a little odd to get into this hobby, so it brings together a lot of similarly odd folks into one space. I love that. I have made friends with several of the racers.

Grimlock212: Wow, that is just sad and unfortunate. I hope you do not take that as a measuring stick against the rest of us that are there just like you to have a little fun. I've never come across a t-marshal or anyone with an attitude like that in my first year of racing at Nor-Cal and all other RC tracks in the bay that me and my boys have been to.

I suggest you take this one up with Kevin and/or Eric at Norcal for this sounds like a pretty serious issue.

normal, no way.  this is common in all types of racing so you should be familiar with it. its all about attitude, good or bad that will always scare the newbies or invite them in, but we all learn from experience. so the announcer will adress this issue during the morning meeting, he will diffinatley read these posts.

PS: Maybe I will just take this up with Kevin next week and see if I can figure out a better way to address this moving forward. Or is this sort of behavior considered normal?

Hey I hear you on the blip thing. That isn't the big problem I had today. Nor am I seriously concerned with the idle issue.

It was how this was addressed with me by the marshal and his overall attitude. There was no need for profanity or an aggressive tone. He could have even said something like, "Hey man, I am really sorry but you were reving it too high and I was worried I might get hurt. Next time make sure to let off the throttle when a marshal gets close to your buggy." I would have chalked that up as a learning experience. I am a really mellow guy, and I know I am not out here expecting to win. I am out to have fun, that is it.

Keep in mind this is the same guy who when placing the race before was cussing at other drivers and getting indignant when other people got in his way. He thought he was entitled to the entire track because he was in 2nd place. I believe he got cut off by the race leader and then decided to start throwing f-bombs. I see a lot of kids at these events as racers and as spectators. I personally think someone like this should get a talking to by the people who are running the race as I wouldn't deem it acceptable behavior.

Also keep in mind that I am pretty sure this is the same guy who nearly got into fisticuffs with the announcer at the event I attended before. I remember the announcer saying that he wasn't going to run any more events if this continued. The good news is he is still announcing, so maybe it got worked out. I could be wrong, but I am 99% sure it is the same guy. He has a look that makes him stand out in a crowd.

I know folks take this type of racing seriously, but do people need to bring an attitude like this to what I would consider a family friendly event?

grimlock, the norm of turn marshalling is for our benifit only. so the marshall will not touch a car if he feels its unsafe, as when you blip the throttle we can loose fingers. so its very wise to get the car to idle correctly before racing begins other wise you may experience this more. i hope your future racing becomes easier.

Mini-rant and very long...but I figure you might want some feedback from a racing newbie.

Let me preface this by saying I have a long history or racing full sized cars and being a high performance race instructor. So I have some experience at auto racing, but I am a complete newbie at RC Racing. I have been building RC cars since the mid-1980s and have just recently decided to start getting active in the hobby since I am disabled and can no longer race full sized vehicles.

Since attending Norcal I have met some really awesome folks. I am horrible with names (due to my disability, my memory sucks). Many of the folks have been great ambassadors of the hobby. I want to thank Kevin (not sure his last name, but one of the Norcal partners), Brad Cabral, Tito and a few of the other guys (yeah I suck at names) as being really good guys and welcoming new folks and making them feel welcomed.

Today 4/17/2010 was my second day at the track on a race day. I raced one time before and it was actually my first time ever driving on the track with my truggy....so obviously I had a bit to learn. I have paid for a membership at Norcal and I try to make it up there at least a few times a week to practice and improve. It is really hard for me to make a race since my health is so poor and I am usually only out of bed for a handful of hours per day. So I rested up in advance to try racing my buggy out there today.

I was having some technical issues during practice and I had to raise the idle on my engine slightly (I suspect maybe a small air leak.) But I thought I got everything sorted out and I headed out for the first qualifier.

I get in a few laps and it is called that the race is starting so I head out and I flip the buggy on the second corner....awesome start! I am doing what I do every time I drive my vehicles on the track and pulsating the throttle to keep it from stalling out while on its lid. The marshal working that corner just looks at my car and does nothing. He is 10 feet from the car and still does nothing. After about 10 seconds I gesture to him, and he yells something at me. Obviously I can't hear a thing on the stand with all the nitro engines going. Finally he walks over to the buggy picks it up for a second, drops it, and then walks away from it.

I have no clue what is even going on. So I literally have to run from the drivers stand out to grab my own buggy since this marshal is refusing to help. He says NOTHING to me, and I am in to much of a hurry to re-start my now stalled buggy. So I get going again. I get back into the stand and I am force to be at the very end and have a bad perspective of the track and I have a horrible overall run (a good lesson learned to try different parts of the stand when practicing.)

As the final lap is called I have the awesome fortune to have my car flip again in my favorite marshal's corner. Once again he does nothing.

At this point I don't even both trying to keep it running and just figure the qualifier is done for me. I am sure my lap times were horrible anyway so I didn't really care.

After I collect my gear I finally see the marshal at the pit stands and I walk up behind me and ask him, "Hey, I couldn't here what you were yelling out there. What was the problem?"

He turns around and get indignant with me telling me, "That he's not going to flip over my f-ing buggy if I keep hitting the throttle."

Of course, I am thinking to myself....My car is having idle problems, I am just trying to keep it running, and NOBODY ever told me this before. It wasn't like I was rev-ing it up to super high RPMs or anything either. This is what I have done every time at the track, during practice, etc. And never has anyone told me I was doing something wrong.

I was shocked that a guy would have such and aggressive response to someone who was so new to the hobby (sport?). I was literally shocked to hear this. I wonder if this guy would have flipped it over if it was a friend of his having issues like me...maybe not, he is quite possibly just a jerk. (I am pretty sure this is the same guy who almost got into a fist fight with the announcer the time I attended a race before.)

I am now trying to decide if RC racing is a hobby for me. I am out here to have fun. I have a limited amount of energy to spend doing fun things and this guy absolutely ruined the day for me. For all the really cool guys, all it takes is a few really high strung folks to ruin the day for those of us trying to learn how to do this.

I have no clue what the solution is, but perhaps there should be a better way to introduce new folks to racing. Maybe if a Norcal representative took me aside and told me, "Hey Fred (making up the name) is kinda a jerk, but he is right and you want to make sure you let off the throttle when they are coming to pick it up." Maybe then I would have left without this horribly bitter taste in my mouth.

Also perhaps people who are at the track can take the time to consider that many of us are new, and are trying to have fun. Do whatever you can do to help others and maybe they will be able to help you down the road. I also wish someone at the track had done something (anything) to help me in this situation.

Maybe this marshal is a really nice guy, but I seriously doubt it with the way he addressed me.

Anyway sorry for the very long post, but I figured this story might be worth passing on.

If anyone at Norcal wants to discuss this, I know Jason and Jonathan know who I am.

The 10th scale track is hard as concrete and smooth.  Make sure you have tires that will work on Clay.   Plenty of traction with the right tires for SC, ahem Goose Bumps.  Racenut's SC is fast, he'll be one of the guys to go after.   Here's a tip, his truck is light so you know what you can do.

A lot of different tires work out there. I like the calibers. There are also holeshots, BK bars, taperpins, barcodes, ect...... No tire has been called the fastest yet.

I run a 6.5, but you can run up to about a 8.5 cause of the track size.
