I wanna give a big Shout and Thanks to the NorCal Crew for getting me all hooked up with a Electric 8th Scale buggy.  They all were fantastic with the advice and answering my question so I would have the best stuff possible so I would spend more time on the track and not in the pits.  I can't wait to get out and run the new layout with this beast of a ride.  NorCal again goes above and beyond with their support and customer service.

Yes, stock electronics are required to be "legal", except radio. This would be an easy way of making sure everyone is legal by implementing this rule:

As a way of keeping everyone honest and having fun, there’s a $200 buy-out option. $200 gets you anyone's Slash minus body, TX & Rx, and battery.

Have to add tires/wheels at Norcal.

Are all electronics requiered to be stock in spec sc? Ive seen people run with lrp's amd it doesn't seem very fair....

Guys, Lets keep stock stock and open brushless. The reason people are going through stock motors so fast is they run 20 minutes plus on a pack and it hurts them. Motor wont win you a race on the new track anyway. Lets see what the speedo motor industry does as an answer to this.

Zorglub,

I've heard good things about sticky kicks, and want to try it out.  I'm pretty sure they're just repackaging kart tire prep called x-factor.  Here's a link:

I don't see why more guys don't run open class.  For $100 you can get an LRP TC and used 10.5 motor and run a whole year at least without worrying about changing motors.  It also takes the care of the battery issue as you can run a marginal battery and still have enough power to yank the front wheels.  When I ran stock class I quickly found out the having a good (expensive) battery was very important with the spec motors.  Andas someone already said, there are some really good motors and some crappy motors.  It's the luck of the draw.  Open IMO is cheaper in the long run.

On another note, anyone know what gearing I should start with in 13.5 buggy, orion motor and RB5SP?

The older I get the faster I used to be.

You gotta leave the stock slash class alone.  Look at it as the "gateway drug."  How many of you remember that word from DARE classes?

Right now it is the only class that can get you up racing competetively for under $300.  Yeah, in the long run a BL setup would be cheaper.  But add $150 to that $300 and it becomes less attractive to the new guy.  You gotta get the new blood in the door.  Then when they come out and race/marshal, they will see the other classes running.  Open CORR, 4x4, buggy, 8th scale etc....   Very rarely do people come in the door saying they want to spend $1500 as a beginner and race 1/8th scale.  I think most of you will agree, the more and more you watch  1/8th scale the more the price becomes reasonable.

I will hopefully get out there and race some stock slash soon.  I got two stock motors.  I told myself that I would go through those two motors and then re-think the whole off road situation.  I might go open, I might buy another stock motor, and/or I might just go to a different off road class.  If it were not for slash and the cost of slash, I probably would never consider off road.

Anybody using traction compound?  Any recommendation?  Is the Sticky Kicks stuff any good?

As for spec, I think that using the spec tires would be a better way to limit the weapon race.  The Slash tires have so little grip that it'd equalize out everything.

I agree with everything being said except for the "cost" part. In my experience with these motors, I have had ones that lasted for a number of race days and some that lasted one day or less. i have even seen one dropped in a truck straight out of the package, raced one heat and was toast. The veriance between the motors is so great with the silver can traxxas motors the "cost" quickly adds up.

Off to Mod SC I go I guess! I am done with the Titan 12T motor.

Every little bit of speed helps in the stock class.  I would love to get a brushless setup, but the stock Traxxas motor is cheap, and as long as you don't over gear it, it will last a long time.  I have like 6-7 race days + a few practice days on my current stock motor.  I have found that if you really want speed, then just get a decent lipo.  then after that if you still want more speed, go brushless and race in the open class.  if you are afraid of too much power, then get a 13.5.

Keep stock simple.  Even people who get a upgraded ESC and run the stock motor will have more speed.  I think we need to keep the electronics "stock" in the stock class.  I dont know that there are enough SC trucks to make another class.  there is already stock/open/4wd.

Guys, take a look at what's going on in onroad right now.  Brushless technology is advancing so fast that tracks and rule makers can't keep up.  If you allow 17.5 for spec, it is only a matter of time before someone runs the latest and greatest technology and obsoletes the kit brushed motors.  Keep the spec class simple, cheap, and fun.  If you want to go brushless go mod.  Spec has a good thing going now and making it too expensive or complex to join in will ruin that.

Here are the rules being used at another local club:

Slash Class: This class is for the Traxxas Slash trucks. It’s a Spec-style class, aimed at keeping costs down, making it more of a drivers class. The Slash must be kept box stock, aside from these changes: You may change the transmitter and receiver. You may use either of the two pinion gears that come in the box. You may change shock oil and bottom shock mounting location (in the stock holes only). You may use an aftermarket Slash style body, painted as you see fit. You may service the diff with your choice of fluids. You may use a 6 cell battery or a 7.4v LiPo. Races will be on the road course track, with jumps and other obstacles. (length is up to the Race Director. Sportsman and Expert Racers.) Please note: This is a buy-out class. As a way of keeping everyone honest and having fun, there’s a $200 buy-out option. $200 gets you anyone's Slash minus body, TX & Rx, and battery.

Short Course Truck: This class is for all MFG's 2wd Short Course Trucks (SCT). Hop up parts may be used, but must be readily available to all racers. Any SCT body may be run. Any MFG tires and rims may be run. 17.5 brushless motors, or original stock motor and ESC may be run. 6 Cell battery, or 7.4v Lipos may be run. Bumpers and skid plates must be made of plastic, aluminium parts in those locations will not be allowed

I agree that 17.5 would be nice in the spec class. I have spent well over the price of a decent brushless esc/motor replacing the stock brushed motors over the past year racing my spec slash. After this past weekend and another brushed motor starting to get weak I had decided to move to mod SC class but I now need to get a whole new truck setup. The slashes cant really compete with the Kyosho's,blitz, and SC10's (good driver or not) in the mod class. So now I will be in way over the cost of a decent 17.5 setup. I for one like the spec class but hate the stock motors. I wouldnt even mind if the 17.5 was a tad slower then the stock brushed motor. just my $0.02

One can find a used brushless ESC/motor combo on ebay for $90.  Ih there is no net gain in speed, nobody is gaining an unfair advantage.  Nothing personal, I plan on racing open CORR as soon as I find the time to do so.  Speaking of spec racing, will the Blitz ESE be allowed in spec?  That truck is coming stock with all the bells and whistles.

Because if it is allowed, I'm gonna put in my $200 speed control and my $90 motor. As of now I've been racing my Slash for two years (only eight race days) and have only replaced my stock motor once, and it didn't matter. I paid $12 for the second motor. If I decide to put in my brushless motor I will sign up in mod.

If 17.5 is close to the spec motors, why not allow it?  In the long run, it's cheaper than changing brushed motors all the time.  I understand the desire to keep costs down, but I don't think that it runs contrary to that goal.
