The Duo 17.5 is the fastest if you can find the gearing the motor likes exactly. From 1 motor to the next, the gearing may not be exactly the same. But from what I have seen the Duo is usually a little faster with the Novak being a close 2nd.

I have the cheap trinity that Express "we blueprint but buy in bulk selling you our leftovers" Motorsports sells.  Orion felt flat from the get go, they even suggested on their web site to gear to 3.5....no way that's gonna happen.

Honestly I think my Novak was faster.  Well before I fried it HAHAHA

Hey Mikey are you using the Trinity Pulse or Duo. I know the Pulse can overheat but the Duo stays much cooler. I am able to run my Duo with an FDR of 3.78 and it doesn't overheat but it also doesn't seem fast fast on the straight so I am thinking of going to 3.5 and keep my temps under 160. When summer kicks in I may have to make some changes.

The only motors I"ve seen that can gear 3.0 to 3.5 is a Novak 17.5

Orion and Trinity will overheat. Both of those motors I have geared at 4.0

Since we're on topic for FDR 101...

Just for clarification:

To achieve more top speed you run a larger pinion and a smaller spur thus a lower FDR.
To achieve more punch you run a smaller pinion and a larger spur gear thus a higher FDR.

Is that right? Anything to add?

Currently running a 17.5 Duo with an SPX and a 2.18 Internal DR using a 49T Pinion and an 85T Spur (64P). FDR is 3.78 and temps are at 135-140F.

I downloaded a gearchart from Stormer Hobbies and it recommended a 17.5 to be geared at 3.5 to 3.0. Seems kinda high.

I'm running a 100t 64p spur & a 53t Pinion in my TC5R. I have a spx in it with a novak 17.5. I run spektrum. My gear ratio is a  3.77. This combo has worked real well for me so far. Hope this helps.

Any advice for a decent starting point for gearing? Would like to go 64p btw...

Tc5r with LRP TC spec and tekin 13.5

Tc5R with SPX and duo 17.5

Both cars running lipo's

What type of FDR's am I looking for? Does not have to be perfect as I'm sure I'll need to mess with it a bit but I'd like to run the cars on Sat and need to get somthing together. Thanks!

We are planning on carpet. We will have to see what the future brings. The layout is fun.

Thanks Kevin.  The layout looks like fun.  I'll have to give it a try on Sunday.  Are you going to carpet or paint the infield?  I would think painting wounld be easier/cheaper.

so bad news and good news.  I got disqualed during my military physical because I had arthroscopic knee surgery in June and I have to go back for a medical review in a few weeks.  A ship date is still to be determined.  :(  SO for the mean time I am still going to be able to race.  I am bitterly disappointed but at the same time this in an opportunity for me to get better prepared.  See you guys on Saturday.
