I was actually going to post on here today about that. We got the new carpet laid down last night. Going to be installing the borders today to lay out the track. It takes up almost all of the shop now. 60ft. straight away. I tried to view the PDF of the new layout on my cell phone the other day and it didn't view. Were you able to see it? |

We'll be out there every night this week I think pulling up the old track and putting down the new carpet and track. We have to move the couch, tv, and computer upstairs and then we can start putting down carpet |

So I've been working for the last few weeks to find more carpet and was finally successful yesterday. I picked up an entire truckload of carpet yesterday. Almost 3000sq. ft. That means that the whole track can be one type of carpet to eliminated the transition between types. That also means we can make the track bigger (almost 2x the size). I've got to finish swapping an engine in a car this weekend, then I will get started laying down the new carpet and track.
What do you all think of this layout? It will be about 65x45 so the long straight will be over 60ft. http://www.brandonkservices.com/rc/Tracks/New%20Shop/new%20design.pdf

Still Bill: The carpet is a dense loop tile (commercial type high traffic tile with rubber backing. They aren't the carpet sample type tiles, but the ones made to pack together and glue down to cover the floor.
Jerryboy: Once we get a scoring system and more carpet to make the track bigger, we will open and have a big race. The longer it takes, the more we get to run on it and see how the carpet holds up to the abuse. We will have to re-paint the track walls though as they aren't nearly as white as they used to be

Sharpe in a roller rink....................lol.
Give Torkrench a break guys. At least he's trying to get something going here.
@ Torkrench.....Me and my boys will get there soon enough, we live in SF (20min from N.o.r.c.a.l.) and so........ our 12th scales are sleeping.
Make a 'big' first race with raffle prizes etc and figure out what tires work best for your track and keep em in stock.
Sharpe in a roller rink................yup.....lol. Team Watermelon! |

Sharpe, the point is that you've raced on other surfaces and didn't like it. You've never raced on this carpet, so you cant deem it inferior All i'm saying is try something before you say it wont work.
Maybe it is my fault for telling everyone up front that it wont be a world class surface. that may have given people the wrong idea.
Here is something that bothers me though.. I race full size cars in an enduro division. We race on dirt, pavement with water, soap, and sometimes watermellons or pumpkins. The differences in track surface is one of the challenges that makes the racing fun. I dont understand why carpet racers are so concerned with getting every track to grip the same. As long as the material is not catching on the cars and causing problems, then why not just have fun trying to drive on a surface that is not perfect. The most fun racing ive ever done was in my garage and driveway where you had no grip on the concrete garage floor and a ton on the driveway concrete. With 4 or 5 other 2wd cars, it was all about who could learn to hold on the best.
Maybe im just missing something though... (I'm not trying to argue here, just trying to have a discussion) |

Tork Ive race in roller rinks on upside down indoor outdoor I don't need to run on an inferior surface to know it doesn't work. Participate in some organized races to see how many people you can draw then decide if you want to invest. TOP racing USA |

rcaddicct13: Yes, we're there pretty much all day on the weekends. Come by anytime.
Sharpe(and everyone else complaining about the carpet tile situation): It's my understanding that people have tried with carpet tiles in the past with poor results. There are thousands of different types of carpet tiles(different thickness, surface texture, weave, backing, etc...) I don't know what they used in the past but we've run pretty extensively on these rubber backed tiles and had no issues. I've stated numerous times in the past that I'm fine upgrading the carpet eventually, but I need to be sure that I'm not throwing money away. If you are going to sit back and complain about the tiles without even visiting the track to test them yourself, then your opinion is worthless.
We have run micro cars, 18th scale minis, 16th scale trucks, 10th scale TCs, and 10th scale SC on the track with a number of different tire types and haven't had any problems yet. The carpet tiles don't make for a world-class racing surface, but it is definitely usable. The hobby is about having fun first, and having a place to run is the most important part. If we find out that the tiles aren't working, then we'll swap them out, but right now we are more interested in making the a size big enough to have fun on, and getting a scoring system in place to be able to track races. Without those things, the carpet doesn't matter.
So come out and try the surface before you dismiss it. What's it going to hurt? |

Since we aren't done with the track, it's not "officially" open yet. We are still just "playing" on the track and adding bits and pieces until it's finished. Right now I'm working on getting more carpet to make the track bigger. Anyone is welcome after 5pm weekday evenings and all day on the weekends. Run whatever you bring right now. |
